Over several decades, Hüsnü M. Özyeğin has made significant contributions to the global community in social entrepreneurship, arts and cultural preservation, women’s rights, children and youth development, equity and education. He earned a civil engineering degree from Oregon State in 1967 and an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1969. While at Oregon State, Özyeğin served as president and first vice president for the Associated Students of Oregon State University (ASOSU).
Özyeğin’s career in finance, banking and development in Turkey and across Europe has long been informed and influenced by his training as a civil engineer at Oregon State. He was appointed managing director of Pamukbank in 1974, then vice chairman and managing director of Yapı Kredi Bank in 1984. In 1987, he founded Finansbank, which quickly became one of Turkey’s most prominent and respected banks. He was its chairman until 2010. At present, Özyeğin is the chairman of Fiba Holding A.Ş., Fibabanka A.Ş., Credit Europe Bank (Suisse) S.A. in Geneva. Fiba Holding is active in financial services, tourism, retail, real estate development and renewable energy.
In 2008, Özyeğin built and staffed a state-of-the-art undergraduate and graduate institution from the ground up, re-envisioning higher education as both highly entrepreneurial and financially accessible. Built on core values of freedom, flexibility, multidimensionality and accessibility, Özyeğin University has become Turkey’s fourth-largest private university.
Özyeğin serves as chairman of the board of trustees of the university. He is also involved in numerous civic activities as chairman of the Hüsnü M. Özyeğin Foundation, board member of the Mother and Child Education Foundation (AÇEV) in İstanbul and member of the Board of Dean’s Advisors at Harvard Business School.
